It was elevated to the category of town by Provincial Law No. 720, of May 20, 1867, - date of creation of the Municipality - separated from Goiana and Nazaré (today Nazaré da Mata); subsequently, on February 4, 1879, by Law No. 1,318, it was classified as August 1892, becoming an autonomous municipality.

The old village called exterro, formed around the church, is now almost gone.
By provincial Law No. 1,055, of May 5, 1872, already mentioned, the parish headquarters was transferred from the village of Desterro to Itambé, with the church of Santo Antônio as its headquarters.
